The integration of AI into business education offers compelling advantages from both learning and business perspectives. By investing in AI, business schools can:
- Bridge the gap between theory and practice
- Personalise learning
- Evolve alongside technological innovations
- Foster a growth mindset and promote lifelong learning
The transformative potential of AI in teaching and learning
Integrating AI into the learning journey—from real-world simulations to personalised learning and content creation—has the potential to transform business education. AI can make education more dynamic, relevant, personal, and effective in preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
Real-World simulations
Imagine not just reading about a case study in an online course but actively participating in it. You could take on a role, negotiate, and make decisions to achieve the best possible outcome for your company. You could get immediate feedback about the decisions and do it anytime and repeatedly to practice your understanding of a topic and to train certain skills. Wouldn’t it be more impactful to practice decision-making in a lifelike scenario rather than just reading about it?
Generative AI can power immersive business simulations, offering students realistic scenarios to enhance decision-making, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills. At ESMT, we integrated such a simulation into our Global Online MBA programme, centred on the antitrust conflict between Fortnite, Google, and Apple. This simulation allows students to step into the roles of key players, engage in strategic negotiations, and receive personalised feedback on their decisions. Features like raw text responses and the ability to ask clarifying questions foster a dynamic learning environment, promoting deeper exploration of concepts and refining strategies. By providing a safe space to apply theoretical knowledge, these simulations bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world challenges. One student described it as “one of the most efficient, responsive, and intuitive simulations” of their MBA experience.
Content creation
Generative AI can assist in creating comprehensive course materials, including case studies, lesson plans, and presentations. These tools save time and ensure that content remains up-to-date with the latest industry trends, leading to higher student engagement.
By incorporating AI-enhanced learning experiences, business schools can streamline administrative tasks, allowing faculty to focus more on teaching and student interaction. This approach fosters well-rounded, job-ready graduates.
Personalised learning
Traditional business education often relies heavily on lectures, case-based learning, and standardised assessments. AI tools, however, introduce a dynamic and interactive approach to learning, empowering business schools to create customised assignments and activities that meet students’ needs, leading to higher student engagement and better learning outcomes.
What if every student could have a virtual tutor that adapts to their learning needs—anytime, anywhere? AI-powered chatbots can provide 24/7 tutoring support, answer students’ queries, and offer tailored explanations. Acting as a ‘learning buddy’, these systems lower barriers to asking questions and improve understanding by adapting to individual learning needs and paces.
At ESMT, customised GPT-powered bots take this idea further, enabling both students and faculty to ‘talk to their courses’, transforming course material into interactive, accessible knowledge bases.
Case Study: Course GPTs at ESMT
Imagine being able to talk directly to your course – asking it questions, clarifying complex topics, or seeking advice on how to improve an assignment. This vision became a reality at ESMT with the development of course-level GPTs, an innovative solution that transforms courses into interactive partners for both students and faculty. By integrating generative AI tools tailored for specific audiences, ESMT redefined how course content is accessed, understood, and utilised.
Personalised support for students
The student-facing GPT serves as a personalised tutor, making learning more dynamic and effective. Students can ask the GPT questions about their course material, gaining tailored explanations and real-world analogies for complex ideas. The GPT also provides constructive feedback on assignments, helping students refine their work while maintaining academic integrity. Beyond this, the GPT offers real-world simulations where students can practice decision-making and problem-solving skills in safe, interactive scenarios. Designed with ethical principles at its core, the tool prioritises critical thinking and deeper engagement, ensuring it supports learning rather than shortcuts.
A partner for faculty and teaching teams
For teaching teams, including faculty, teaching assistants, and learning designers, the GPT becomes a trusted partner in course development and administration. Faculty members can use the GPT to gain insights into course structure, identify redundancies or gaps, and generate ideas for new activities. Teaching assistants can quickly familiarise themselves with the course material, leveraging the GPT to answer questions and clarify content for students. Learning designers benefit from the GPT’s ability to provide an overview of course alignment and suggest improvements that enhance learning outcomes.
Early feedback and ongoing evaluation
While the full impact of Course GPTs is still under evaluation, early feedback from students and faculty has been encouraging. One student noted:
“The course GPT is an all-in-one: the diligent student who lends you notes, the genius student who answers your questions, and your friend who brainstorms with you and reviews your work.”
A faculty member added:
“I am an absolute fan of the tool and have tried it for various fields. For group work, I plan to test a suggested group assignment. I asked for ‘new’ hot topics in the area of platforms and selected two—sustainability and local vs global – for my course. I also used it to summarise a new article that I truly liked. For me, the idea-generation capability is a standout asset, and I enjoy exploring its functionalities. In general, I am totally impressed by the tool, plus the possibility for the students to also embrace the technology!”
Preparing students for the future job market
As AI reshapes industries, the skills required in the job market are evolving. Business schools must prepare students not only with technical knowledge of AI but also with a critical understanding of its applications and ethical implications.
Key areas for focus include:
- Hands-on experience: Integrating AI tools into curricula allows students to gain practical exposure to the technologies they will encounter in their careers
- Human-AI collaboration: Emphasising AI as a complement to human ingenuity, business education should teach students how to combine AI’s strengths with applying their own critical thinking and creativity
AI literacy is no longer optional—it is essential for students to thrive in a world where businesses increasingly rely on AI for data analysis, decision-making, and customer engagement.
Fostering lifelong learning and growth mindsets
Investing in AI is not just about keeping pace with technological advancements; it’s about cultivating a growth mindset and embedding a culture of lifelong learning within business schools. This adaptability ensures institutions remain relevant and prepares students for the complexities of a rapidly changing workforce.
